Most technical reports, made by international, regional and local authorities, explained that the most common cause of fish perishing is oxygen depletion, i.e. solved oxygen in water due to a die-off of the phytoplankton and decomposition. These reports also showed that the main cause of this phenomenon is the algae Cochlodinium polykrikoides.
